Huggett Sod Farm, Inc., located in Marlette, MI, is committed to cultivating high-quality sod on our expansive 1,000-acre farm. With a rich history and decades of expertise, we produce premium turf grass tailored to the needs of homeowners, landscapers, sports fields, parks, and more. Sue Huggett and three of her children currently run this family-owned business: Dow Huggett, Chris Dischinger, and Elizabeth Huggett. Together, they uphold the family legacy, ensuring the farm’s enduring tradition of quality and dedication to excellence.
Founded in 1957 by Dow Huggett, the farm began with just a roll-top desk and 30 acres, primarily producing mint before transitioning to sod. Initially, Huggett Sod Farm offered one type of sod, harvested using a “Ryan” walk-behind sod cutter. Dow and a crew of six, including his son Wallace, manually rolled, loaded, and unloaded the sod, then delivered it within a 100-mile radius of Marlette, Michigan, using a small stake truck.
In 1961, Wallace Huggett assumed control of the farm’s daily operations and significantly expanded the business over the next four decades. Under his leadership, the farm grew to encompass 800-1000 acres, including a tree nursery on an additional 90 acres. The business was incorporated in 1966.
In 2002, Wallace’s second son, Mark Huggett, took over the daily operations at
Huggett Sod Farm, Inc. Today, the farm produces a
bluegrass blend, a
bluegrass/fine fescue mix, and
trees, supplying products throughout
Michigan, Ohio,
and parts of
Indiana.
